I wonder which college will reportedly be interested in University of Dayton men's basketball coach Brian Gregory next.
Rutgers of the Big East is the latest team to have some interest. In the past, it seemed that we heard about DePaul being interested yearly, given Gregory's Chicago ties. Every time there is a major college or a college in a major conference with an opening, Gregory's name pops up.
Doesn't matter who comes calling. Gregory is staying.
Why leave? He's got a nice and comfy contract with the Flyers. He's got an arena that's packed every night (it's among the top 30 in attendance yearly). His program hasn't been investigated for anything other than a missing offense (more on that later). His players don't get in trouble and when they do, as we saw with recruit Jesse Berry, Gregory does the right thing. In this case he told Berry thanks, but no thanks.
And let's be brutally honest. When it comes to college hoops, UD is the only game in town. Sorry Wright State. I'm a Raiders fan too. But Dayton gets top billing in the newspaper, on the sports highlights and with fans too. The Flyers attendance nearly triples a typical WSU game. Shoot, even Andy Katz of ESPN.com, when writing about Brad Brownell, referred to Wright State as Dayton-based. Ouch.
Sure, there are those who think Gregory can't coach his way out of a paper bag and that with all the great recruiting classes he should have more NCAA Tournament appearances and wins.
But let me tell you the big reason why I think Gregory will stay around for a bit. He has some serious unfinished business at The Arena. Throughout the season, and really since UD fired Don Donoher, I have complained that the Flyers' offensive imagination is non-existent. It's almost as boring as watching Steve Trachsel pitch.
Basically someone dribbles around, passes, a few more guys move around and then someone has to heave one as the shot clock winds down. Every now and then Chris Wright or Paul Williams got loose for a dunk.
I had often said on Facebook that if Brad Brownell coached UD they would regularly be a 25-win team because of the talent UD has and the play-calling of Brownell.
But that all changed when UD made it's run to the NIT title this past season. Gregory let the guys run. And run. And run. And run. And run. Along the way they beat teams from the Big East (on the road), Big 10 (on the road) and the SEC and ACC in the NIT's Final Four at the Garden.
And run. And run. And run. And run.
We finally saw what the Flyers offense could be. Guys were gunning from everywhere and making 3s. They were slashing to the hoop and slamming the ball down with authority. And the defense was relentless.
If Gregory releases the hounds next year like he did in the NIT I think most of the complaining about Gregory and all the mini-me comments will cease.
And at first glance, UD should be in good shape next year. With the recruits coming in, led by point guard Juwan Staten, and with who returns (Wright is not NBA-ready and I think he will be back as long as he doesn't sign with an agent), UD should again feel good about it's chances. They underachieved this past season, but they played to their potential in the post-season.
The post-season is where it matters. And next year I think Dayton will matter in the post-season.
