Time for Notre Dame to join Big Ten

I wonder who will join the Big Ten.
It's a forgone conclusion that the conference will expand. It's all about making a buck, and with more teams, the Big Ten can have a football championship game, fill a stadium (probably Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis) and get a nationally televised game.
Cha-ching!
So who is going to join? I've read about all kinds of rumors from Texas to Nebraska to Rutgers.
Personally, none of them sound good to me. The Rutgers option is intriguing, some talk show experts say, because it would open the Big Ten Network to the New York television market.
Good in theory. But geographically it's not a great fit, especially for Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
I certainly hope the powers that be don't make a huge decision based on the number of households who could potentially watch the conference's television station.
Texas and Nebraska aren't good geographic fits either. Too far west and too far south.
I think it's time for Notre Dame to make the move.
Those against the move think the Irish can be better off as an independent in football which allows them to put together a tough schedule and not be locked into playing 8 conference games a year. Yeah, tough ..... Western Michigan, Tulsa, Army.
College football juggernauts.
Notre Dame already is playing Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State next year. Replace Stanford, Boston College, Western Michigan, Tulsa and either Navy or Army with conference games and the Irish still can play Utah, Pitt and USC. And one of the service academies.
Ohio State and others have been able to play one or two national teams every year. The Buckeyes just finished a series with USC and not will play the University of Miami for a couple years. They also had a home and home with Texas a few years ago.
Even playing current Big ten football doormats Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois would be more attractive than Tulsa and Western Michigan for Notre Dame.
And just think about other sports. Notre Dame vs. Purdue in basketball every year? The Irish vs. the Spartans? Great possibilities.
The Big Ten gets more "star power." It gains a team with a national recruiting base, a national TV base and Heisman and national title history.
Face it, only Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are "national" teams in the conference now.
It would give football fans in Bloomington, Minneapolis, Champaign-Urbana and Chicago another reason to go to games..... the ND mystique. Yes, it still exists. There's a "wow factor" you get when you see the gold helmets, the mascot and the kilt-wearing band members.
And if the Big Ten needs to expand to 14 to make the conference championship game work here's a few other geographically friendly and intriguing additions ..... Kentucky, Louisville, Missouri, Tennessee.
Nonetheless, Big Ten expansion has to start in South Bend.

  1. Scott...I couldnt agree with you more. I am still trying to figure out why the Big Ten didnt go after Kentucky or Louisville. The only thing I can figure is that the state of Kentucky does not have enough cable/satellite providers to justify adding one of them. The same goes for West Virginia. But with Rutgers, comes both New Jersey and New York....so the dollars make sense there.

PS...thanks for writing again! I am enjoying it!
